Schools are to be run more like businesses, with boards of trained governors, ministers have indicated. The Government was expected to announce a major review of governing bodies yesterday after research showed that one in nine governors’ positions sat empty.
Jim Knight, schools minister, will lead a review group that will include teachers’ union representatives, which will report back in the autumn. He promised to retain the voluntary ethos of governing bodies, but wants to ensure they are smaller and more streamlined. They should include members from business and minority groups and receive better training, he said.
