In total, more than 100,000 results were queried by schools and colleges - a 7 per cent rise.
Teachers asked for 97,907 exam re-marks, launched 2,595 challenges against the judgements of coursework moderators and queried examiners’ maths in 1,520 cases.
A total of 726 grades were the subject of an appeal, where schools were unhappy with the board’s initial reaction to a complaint. Overall, 18,548 grades were changed as a result.
The figures were from the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority’s report on inquiries and appeals for summer 2004.
