More than 18,000 GCSE and A-level papers had their grades changed last year after schools challenged the original result, a 5 per cent increase on 2003, annual figures have revealed.
In total, more than 100,000 results were queried by schools and colleges - a 7 per cent rise.
Teachers asked for 97,907 exam re-marks, launched 2,595 challenges against the judgements of coursework moderators and queried examiners’ maths in 1,520 cases.
A total of 726 grades were the subject of an appeal, where schools were unhappy with the board’s initial reaction to a complaint. Overall, 18,548 grades were changed as a result.
