Stoke-on-Trent plans to replace all 18 of its secondary schools with academies and trust schools. But the pound;200 million reorganisation plans have met fierce resistance from St Joseph’s College, a Roman Catholic grammar school, which would be one of the first grammar schools to close in 20 years. Its supporters are appealing to the courts and to the Pope in an attempt to forestall the closure.
