Schools are at the heart of Generation Green, a new community-based environmental programme that empowers teachers, schools and their local communities to lead the UK in tackling climate change through the adoption of responsible green behaviours.

Generation Green will see schools across the country learning about sustainable behaviour through national curriculum-based lesson plans which support the key stage 2 and 3 geography and science curricula. Better still, it will help teachers, pupils and the wider community see that small, everyday steps can have a significant effect on reducing their impact on the environment.

Generation Green encourages pupils to apply what they learn in the classroom in their everyday lives, and rewards them for their actions with Green Leaves, which can be collected by schools and redeemed against a variety of useful green prizes such as botanical kits, weather stations and solar photovoltaic kits. The actions schools can take to earn Green Leaves are as simple as appointing a class lights monitor to switch off unnecessary lights. In addition, schools can compete for valuable renewable energy prizes, such as solar panels and wind turbines.

The benefits for schools participating in the programme go further still. According to data from the Carbon Trust, adopting simple steps rewarded by Generation Green such as turning off lights, and computers when not required, could result in savings of around 10 per cent on schools' energy bills.

Joining the 1,500 schools already registered to participate in the programme is easy. Teachers simply visit www.generationgreen.co.uk and register their school online to start collecting leaves and downloading lesson plans.

Better still, parents and the local community can also take green actions to collect leaves to donate to schools, boosting the opportunities for schools to earn rewards!
