GTC opposes smaller fees allowance for part-timers

ENGLAND'S General Teaching Council is challenging proposals that would effectively mean part-time teachers paying more for membership than their full-time colleagues.

Under the School Teachers Pay Review Body proposals, full-time teachers would get a pound;33 salary rise to cover the GTC membership fee and possible future increases. But part-timers would only get a proportion of the extra cash, according to the amount of time they work. All teachers must pay the full fee. GTC member Peter Bishop, who proposed the motion on the issue, said: "It is not the amount involved that is the important issue, it's the principle." His motion was carried unanimously. There are about 41,000 part-time teachers in England.
