Guitar gently weeps for lost pension

(Photograph) - Singing the pension blues: Gordon Lawrence fears his dreams of a long and happy retirement may have turned into a nightmare due to Government plans to raise the pension age from 60 to 65.

The English teacher from Northgate high school, Ipswich, is one of many who fear that an extra five years in the job will burn them out.

The Government is claiming that the final salary teachers' pension scheme will still represent a good deal when the changes come in.

Unions have vowed to fight the plans with industrial action, warning that they can only worsen the teacher shortage.
