The influence of our columns never ceases to amaze us. In the very week we reflected on the Glasgow social phenomenon of the “wee hairy”, no less an authority than Professor Michael Farthing, dean of medicine at Glasgow University,deployed the term less than sure-footedly when he referred in a graduation ceremony to Mhairi Clarke, one of the graduands, as Mahairy.

She and her family were, as they say in the home of the hairy, fair affrontit.
