The personal computer is 20 years old. IBM’s first PC went on sale in August 1981 with a price tag that would equal pound;3,400 today. It sparked the start of a revolution that has seen an estimated 500 million computers in use worldwide. A Microsoft survey claimed that equal numbers of people regard the PC and the television as the most important piece of technology in their home.
