The news that schools can omit from league tables pupils living on foot-and-mouth-affected farms was welcome, as had been the earlier concession to omit children of recent asylum-seekers. Both announcements were made by the Department for Education and Employment when the relevant stories were on the front page.

Now that the Government is apparently willng to correct the injustices of the league tables, can we expect to see schools with less funding, or with disadvantaged pupils, being given special consideration? Or are such concessions only made when they can be accompanied by a topical DFEE press release?
