A SLIM majority of headteachers believe that the McCrone recommendations would improve teaching standards within five years, the Liberal Democrats report.
Jamie Stone, the party’s education spokesman, said a survey of 121 primary and secondary heads revealed support for introducing the package in full. Just over half - 56 per cent - say standards would improve if the proposals were implemented in their entirety.
Mr Stone said the responses showed that heads wanted the cCrone package, “not for reasons of personal gain”. George Ross, secretary of the Headteachers’ Association of Scotland, said the report was “a basis for taking things forward”, although a number of concerns remain.
“The Government is asking for social inclusion to be delivered and a lot of that has to be delivered outwith the school day,” Mr Ross said. “We are concerned that what McCrone says will allow that to be managed. We are not sure what heads can expect.”
