Heads from ethnic minorities

* It is appalling that only 19 of the 1000 heads appointed in 20034 came from ethnic minorities ("The Issue: headship", Friday magazine, October 14). This in no way matches the ethnic make up of society or the school population.

The situation is even more disgraceful when one looks at local education authority advisory and support services. Far from modelling good practice, many of them have even fewer staff from minority communities.

Sadly little will change until a coherent and well-resourced strategy is produced to address this problem.
