Heads’ qualification unveiled

A REVAMPED qualification for aspiring heads to be introduced next year will take a year to complete, rather than the three years originally suggested.

Those aiming for posts in England will take the new-look National Professional Qualification for Headship. It includes features such as school-based assessment tackling real-life leadership issues, greater use of compuers to improve self-study opportunities, and more visits to successful schools.

In Wales, a national centre is to be set up for the training of heads, said Rosemary Butler, the Welsh education secretary. New headteachers in Wales will get their own induction programme and serving heads are to have a new leadership programme.
