A head's support makes all the difference

I work in a good comprehensive in a nice area with a supportive head. We have improved our results and had a recent successful Ofsted. Some of the teachers who applied to go through the threshold have had long absences, or rarely mark books, or have problems controlling their classes.

My wife works in a vastly improved comprehensive in a difficult area with a head who does not support his staff. There are high levels of staff absence; there have been breakdowns and suicides. Nevertheless, results have improved and the school has had a successful Ofsted. In this school, some of the teachers who applied to go thrugh the threshold have had long absences, or rarely mark books, or have problems controlling their classes.

I am well-organised and good at paperwork, but a boring teacher. My wife has been praised by senior management observers and Ofsted inspectors for her "inspirational" teaching, but is no good at paperwork.

My head supported his staff and the assessor passed everyone. In my wife's school, the head did not support three members of staff and the assessor failed them. I am overjoyed. I passed. My wife is gutted - she is one of the three in her school who failed.
