Officials in Greater Kilmarnock, aka East Ayrshire, introduced their councillors to the joys of quality management in education at last week’s education committee.

After explaining the use of performance indicators, monitoring of standards, strategic planning, auditin and best value, they basked in self-approbation and waited expectantly for questions.

There came only one. It’s all very impressive, a councillor piped up, “but what are you doing about head lice?” This is a PI which HMI clearly missed. Heads should roll.
