Gerald Haigh’s list of “best buys” (TES, June 2) is missing an essential item, a shredder, without doubt my best buy of the 1990s.

At a cost of Pounds 230, it is a real snip. I set Pounds 30 of the cost against waste management; the other Pounds 200 is my personal health-care insurance. It takes care of 80 per cent of my mail, reducing the multitude of educational acronyms to a respectable size. The product also makes excellent rabbit bedding, I hear.
