Phil Hanlon, the charismatic public health professor from Glasgow yoonie who chaired the sexual health group, may not think much of the nation’s health (TESS, last week), but he certainly has many good things to say about our schools.

In his address to the TES ScotlandEdinburgh City Council conference two weeks ago, Hanlon recounted with some awe his experience of students who come up to the university with five Higher A grades, who have probably taken a year out in Camp America and who can play the violin to grade seven.

“And they put us at our ease while we interview them”.
