The Amber Spyglass BBC Radio 4, Saturday, January 18, 2.30-5pm Radio 4‘s project for this winter, after last year’s reading of Harry Potter, has been a lavish three-part adaptation by Lavinia Murray of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy. The series concludes tomorrow afternoon with The Amber Spyglass, the final volume and the first children’s book to win the Whitbread Book of the Year Award (2002). Pullman’s stories make a darker and more controversial choice for radio than Harry Potter: they have been condemned by some critics as anti-Christian. The lead children’s roles of Lyra and Will are played by Lulu Popplewell and Dan Anthony, while the juicy parts of Satanic Lord Asriel and the enjoyably wicked Mrs Coulter go to Terence Stamp and Emma Fielding.
