Hearing phonics

I refer to a letter (TES, April 4) which commented (quite reasonably) that if good phonic awareness is a prerequisite for a high standard of literacy, then hearing-impaired children would be disadvantaged.

In fact hearing-impaired children often do lag behind their hearing peers in literacy skills.
