Pity the poor teachers from the the Deepings school in Lincolnshire, stranded overnight in two buses full of secondary kids on the M11 last week. Not because of the cold, you understand, but for a night spent cheek by jowl with sweaty, over-wrought teenagehood.
An exhausted Robin Hewat, head of performing arts, admitted there were a few blood-curdling screams in the night: “The over excitement came in waves . It did become very wearing.”
Incredibly, it was not the first “snow-coach-hell” experience for Mr Hewat.
An avalanche in France 14 years ago treated him to the delights of two nights on an over-crowded school bus with an overflowing toilet. The man deserves the George Cross!
