The Hertfordshire company Classwatch has sold systems to more than 50 UK schools which record clear sound as well as colour pictures.

Andrew Jenkins, Classwatch managing director, said: “We started off saying they would stop stuff getting nicked, but now we are talking more about recording lessons to help teachers’ professional development.”

The NASUWT said it would ballot for strike action in schools it found were using CCTV footage for official lesson observation.
