Hand, Heart and Soul brings together 350 objects to tell the story, for the first time, of the Arts and Crafts movement in Scotland.

David Patterson, co-curator, says: “During the period between 1880 and 1939, the Arts and Crafts movement was in evidence throughout Scotland, from Orkney down to Dumfries and Galloway and all points in between.

Eighty per cent of the objects on show have never been exhibited before and were borrowed from more than 60 public and private collections.”

Displayed over three floors, the paintings, sculpture, ceramics, tapestry, embroidery, costume, furniture, jewellery, silver, manuscripts and architectural drawings will demonstrate that although the movement in Scotland and England had a common aim - “restoring beauty to everyday experience” - it developed distinctive characteristics north of the border.

The exhibition takes its name from a recent book by Elizabeth Cumming, who has researched the Arts and Crafts movement for 15 years and is co-curator of the show.

School groups that book can visit the exhibition free of charge. A large education and activities area complements the show, offering “discovery trail” worksheets and the opportunity to have a go at collage, stained glass, house-building and printmaking. Artist-led workshops for primary and secondary schools will be held in August and September.

A family and adult events programme will run alongside the show, including a wide range of lectures, craft classes and demonstrations.

Three short films have been made of Arts and Crafts houses in Scotland and they will be on show until the exhibition ends on September 23.
