Special events are taking place at museums and art galleries across the country for the third annual Show Scotland weekend (May 2-5), organised by Museums Galleries Scotland (formerly the Scottish Museums Council).
A Victorian Encounter organised by Stromness Museum in Orkney tomorrow aims to take the town and visitors back in time. Costumed actors will bring some 19th-century characters to life, and artist Rebecca Marr will offer the chance to try old photographic techniques in a temporary darkroom. Visitors can walk to the museum along a trail showing what Victorian shops and houses were like or they can ride in a replica carriage.
Tweeddale Museum and Gallery is hosting Czesc! Hello!, a celebration of all things Polish, at the Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre in Peebles this evening. The event (free for under-16s) features Polish food, music and film, as well as an exhibition created by members of the local Polish community which reflects the area’s current and historical links with Poland.
In Glasgow, you can hear live performances on a travel theme from Scottish Opera at the Museum of Transport all weekend from 12-4pm. There is more music plus dancing at the People’s Palace on Glasgow Green, when the city’s cultural diversity is highlighted on May 4 from 12-3pm. The St Mungo Museum is offering free yoga, t’ai chi and meditation sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
In Perth on Saturday afternoon, the Museum and Art Gallery is staging Japanorama, Japanese themed activities and demonstrations for all the family, featuring drummers, dancing, origami and karate, tea and sushi.
