In the temptation to squeeze in as many landmark events possible into the curriculum, teachers have generally struggled to find time for areas such as cultural or scientific history. This feature gives us a lovely set of ideas for a new look at the achievements of the Egyptians or the Greeks in key stage 2 or the Romans in KS3. One way to kick off a study of the Voyages of Discovery could be to ask pupils to work out the connection between a clock and a sailing ship (accurate navigation). At KS2 or KS3 the standardisation of time by the Victorians in order to make railway timetables make sense could be a fun investigation - imagine trying to catch a train if each station ran on its own time!
