Pupils often know isolated periods well, but struggle to connect them.

Sewage and sanitation is about as basic as you can get. The Romans, medieval people, the Tudors, Stuarts and Victorians all struggled with sewage disposal. Pupils can debate whether there should be more statues of civil engineers and fewer of politicians and generals.

KS4

Hold a competition to design a memorial to Bazalgette or to a health pioneer such as Liverpool’s Dr Wiliam Duncan, Britain’s first medical officer of health, which could be used in the SHP GCSE unit on medicine through time.
