Luddites v London rioters

Pupils compare Luddism with last summer's London riots in a source analysis lesson from nomist.

The resource pack includes a PowerPoint, handouts and a lesson plan. Pupils start by comparing a cartoon of the Luddites to a news image of the London riots. Then, in pairs, they consider what connects the two images, discussing the protests and source bias.

Pupils are asked, "Was Luddism just mindless violence?", and must reach an answer by analysing historical sources.

The task gives pupils an opportunity to practise source analysis while reflecting on the London riots. It emphasises that history is always relevant to what is happening in the world today.
