Continental citizens
Spark lively discussion about Britain’s place in the European Union with a new citizenship website.
What is it?
Citizens of Europe (www.citizensofeurope.org) introduces the European Union, human rights and democracy. It is divided into two areas: one for teachers, one for pupils. The teacher’s section includes: - Lesson plans, with suggested activities and downloadable worksheets. - Democracy in action: ideas for practical exercises, including a voting activity, debating role play and games for the classroom. - Class tasks such as vocabulary lists, information sheets and quizzes. - Printable resources: downloadable PDFs of the site’s content for easy printing. The pupil area is full of facts, maps and an interactive quiz. Split them into groups, asking each group to research a particular topic and then present their findings. It’s also useful for homework or extra reading.
