A colourful opportunity to explore the chequered history of tartan - from its earliest known origins in 325 to formal clan garb can be had at the Scottish Tartans Museum in Keith, Moray. Rarities include a 23-foot kilt; leopardski sporrans encrusted with jewels and an 18th-century tartan sample book. Guided tours can be arranged. Tel: 01542 888419.
