A website uncovering the history of the women’s suffrage movement in Scotland has been launched by the National Library of Scotland (NLS).

“A Guid Cause” uses material from the NLS and other collections to chart the struggles of women to get the vote. Photographs, pamphlets, newspaper reports and diary entries show how and why the suffrage campaign came about.

Activities for secondary pupils and teachers include information about the arrest of Emmeline Pankhurst at St Andrew’s Hall in Glasgow in March, 1914.

The three projects on the website, designed by teachers, are tailored to support Curriculum for Excellence.

The first project, aimed at third- and fourth-level pupils, focuses on critical thinking and investigative enquiry skills by asking pupils to use archive sources to find out how and why women campaigned for the right to vote; the second, for the same age range, is cross-curricular in design and asks pupils to make a film documentary; and the third, for Higher history students, requires pupils to organise a class debate and find out how to use archive sources to support their extended essays.
