The Children are Unbeatable! Alliance - a coalition of 350 welfare organisations - is seeking to add a clause to the Children's Bill, amending the Children and Young Persons Act 1933. It hopes that the removal of "reasonable chastisement", a common law defence, will send out the message that hitting children is unacceptable.
Charities are campaigning for the removal of a 150-year-old right for parents to use "reasonable chastisement" on their children.
