Is HMC a golf club for the boys?

Psychologists might call it “a pattern of behaviour”. The Diary, ever fond of conspiracy theories, was very excited to learn that the Headmasters’

Conference, until recently the preserve of public school headmasters, was holding its annual do at a leading golf venue for the second year running.

Last year it was the home of golf, St Andrews. Next month, the conference will reconvene at The Belfry, host of the Ryder Cup.

What will the small band of headmistresses, now admitted to HMC membership, make of this? Will Priscilla Chadwick, the union’s first woman president, be practising her iron shots rather than her conference speech?

Or are the sport-loving blokes about to be outmanoeuvred? Next year’s venue will be The Midland, a luxury hotel in the heart of Manchester’s shopping centre. Whether this represents overdue feminisation or not we shall have to wait until the 2007 conference venue is announced. We recommend Milan or Paris.
