Highland councillors have voted by a majority of one to approve a policy that will eventually mean the closure of the education hostel at Portree High. The hostel, which has a capacity of 57, currently houses 35 pupils.

Councillors agreed to remove the right of residence for pupils from Kyleakin and from the communities of Drumfearn to Calligarry in Sleat. This will reduce the number of pupils in the hostel to 16 from July next year.

On current projections, numbers will not exceed 20 over the next six years and Highland Council can then close the hostel because of declining numbers.
