Ewan Aitken, TES Scotland columnist about town (to wit Edinburgh, where he looks after children and families), noted at a conference last week that one of his constituents - had he lived in the 18th century - would have been one James Tyler, the first Briton to successfully fly in a balloon.
Tyler landed near his home in the city’s Restalrig area. No doubt with the council’s controversial congestion charging scheme in mind, Aitken commented: “Whether he flew in that direction because he was fed up waiting for a number 25 bus, I don’t know.”
