The assembled principals and other luminaries from the world of FE gathered on deck to witness Tower Bridge being raised for their vessel to pass through. Then, with the wine, there flowed much gossip... Sally Dicketts, principal of Oxford and Cherwell college, recalled the time when a college she worked at made the pages of Sunday Sport with a tale of how two students enjoyed lesbian sex in the college toilets.
"I don't know how they managed," she said. "The cubicles were tiny. But the story had a dramatic effect on recruitment - student numbers soared the following year."
It just goes to show that there's no such thing as bad publicity.
My own sixth-form college can go one better, though, having produced a star of the porn industry and a Labour minister.
