Howard's way

We cannot let another notable historical event pass without comment, to wit the centenary cele-brations for the former Leith Nautical College which kicked off last week at Edinburgh's Jewel and Esk Valley College, of which it is now part.

It was a fine touch to persuade Lord Balfour of Burleigh to be the top guest: his grandfather of similar title opened the nautical college in 1903 as the Secretary of State for Scotland.

This is not the only family connection. Principal Howard McKenzie discovered that his grandfather, Harris, studied for his master's certificate at the old college across the road from which, indeed, he had been born.

Life's just full of coincidences.
