Teachers complained last year that they were left gasping for breath because pupils were spraying themselves with excessive amounts of Lynx deodorant.

The craze for the overpowering scents seemed to affect Year 9 boys worst and led some teachers to ban their boyfriends and husbands from touching the stuff.

But a Janet Stanford of Peacehaven has written to the Brighton Argus with a fascinating tip. Apparently, Lynx spray is a remarkably effective solvent for removing graffiti. "It really does work," she wrote. "Although heaven knows what the Lynx effect does to men's armpits."

Teachers should bear in mind that rubbing errant pupils' armpits against their walls is likely to land them in front of a GTC conduct tribunal.
