Making HTML less daunting and introducing networks

TES ICT adviser Mark Clarkson has compiled a collection of resources offering creative ideas for topics around computing, control and programming for secondary ICT lessons.

Learning HTML coding can be difficult and overwhelming. However, Anna Debenham has shared a link to a web-based activity from the Hackasaurus website, which allows pupils to inspect web pages and learn how they are put together. The “X-ray goggles” enable pupils to explore and edit live websites and learn simple parts of HTML.

A fish and shark game, a classic David Phillips screencast looking at how to make a straightforward game in Flash, is an excellent introduction for secondary pupils. Lots of skills and commands used in scratch and the kids end up with a game that they will genuinely play. Loads of extension possibilities are easily identifiable too.

In “Creating a Computer Game for Infant Children in Scratch”, Simon Haughton has produced a step-by-step set of instructions downloadable from http:scratch.mit.edu. Pupils in upper primary and secondary can design a “vehicle” and track before creating a program that allows the vehicle to move in response to the keyboard.

HappyHippy has contributed links to “cs4fn - Computer Science for Fun”, a website that brims with ideas for lower and upper secondary lessons and challenges based on a variety of computing topics. It explores “how computer science is also about people, solving puzzles, creativity, changing the future and, most of all having fun”.

Finally, Zsirajdin has uploaded an illustrated guide to computer networks. The information covers network topologies, encryption and authentication techniques and common network devices.
