Let the music play
Interact UK (interactuk.net) helps primary teachers to deliver inspiring music lessons. What is it? A series of interactive DVDs for early years and key stages 1-2, containing: printable lesson plans; assessment grids; interactive whiteboard activities. Pupils learn basic music theory, musical techniques such as African drumming, and listen to music from different cultures. Each DVD is cross- curricular, with music introducing pupils to a historical period such as ancient Egypt, geographical issues such as world climate or continents such as Africa. Why is it useful? Jeana Hopkins and Ilze Bull, both experienced music teachers, created Interact in response to the Ofsted report Music in Schools: wider still, and wider, which argued that teachers needed more continuing professional development. The DVDs excite pupils about music through playing, composition and listening rather than studying theory. They support non- specialists with detailed lesson plans and ready-to-use resources. Inset training is also available. “The children are very motivated and are disappointed when their music lessons end,” says Samantha Bonsor, performing arts director at Tower Road Academy primary in Boston, Lincolnshire. “The standards of teaching and learning music have definitely been raised.”
