A stage to the world

John Peel’s record collection, Shakespeare performances and early works by film directors Ken Russell, Ridley Scott and Shane Meadows are available, free, through a new digital service from the Arts Council and the BBC.

What is it?

Pupils can listen, watch and read a range of material, including hip-hop dance performances at Sadler’s Wells Theatre, 60 poems in honour of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and short films about disability. A-Z videos highlight a selection of John Peel’s vast music collection, introducing pupils to a history of pop music. Subtitled recordings of a Hindi interpretation of Twelfth Night, a Korean A Midsummer Night’s Dream and other performances from the Globe to Globe festival help pupils to study Shakespeare and explore cultures from around the world.

The service is live until the end of October. www.thespace.org.
