If you’ve discovered www.lovereading.co.uk, you’ll know that the site lets you cherry-pick your way through the opening chapters of new fiction and non-fiction (The Good Back Guide by Barrie Savory is fascinating for anyone who’s been hunched over a desk for a while) . At the moment you can download extracts from the six novels on the Orange prize shortlist. The children’s offshoot, www.lovereading4kids.co.uk, has plans to offer extracts from books shortlisted for the Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals and the Branford Boase Award (shortlist announced in this column last week). While you’re looking out for those, note that the site already offers extracts from children’s fiction graded from pre-school to 12-plus and a “like this, try this” function to help you find the right book for the right child.
