Independents urged to back academies

Schools minister Nick Gibb has urged private schools to back new academies as a way of fulfilling their mission to help poorer pupils. Sponsoring or supporting academies would give independent schools the opportunity to spread their "unique ethos, culture and thinking" to tens of thousands of young people who cannot afford their fees, Mr Gibb said in a speech to the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference's congress for deputy heads in Manchester.
