About a third of new secondary teachers had not entered the profession within a year of qualifying.

Only 13 per cent starting primary teacher-training courses in 1997-98 were men. The number of men on secondary training courses has fallen to 40 per cent.

The proportion of male recruits to primary teacher training varies across providers from almost a third to zero.

Homerton College in Cambridge is the best institution in the primary sector when it comes to the proportion of students entering with an average of at least one B and two Cs at A-level.

Homerton, Nottingham Trent and Durham universitites were top of the league when it came to the proportion of post-graduate trainees with at least a 2.1 degree.
