Your job and career questions answered

I see pay scales divided into inner London and elsewhere. Where is the boundary?

The boundary was set nearly 30 years ago, during a teacher supply crisis (see map, right). Schools in 19 of the inner-London boroughs qualify for the inner-London pay scale. So schools in Barking, Dagenham and Brent are inner, but those in Waltham Forest or Kingston are outer, although they qualify for the outer-London supplement of pound;2,247. Those in the London fringe area further out receive an allowance of pound;870.

Some schools sited near the boundaries of different salary areas may use recruitment and retention allowances to offset the difference between their basic salary levels and those in neighbouring schools that are in the higher pay areas. Find a full list of areas in the teachers’ pay and conditions document.
