Insights to blind hazards

Advertising boards, overhanging hedges, scaffolding and wheelie bins... the stuff of many a local paper's letters page also poses a serious hazard for the blind and partially sighted. A new citizenship teaching pack from the Guide Dogs for the Blind Association encourages pupils to empathise by designing friendlier road layouts. It also gives schools a chance to sign up for Shades Day, a fundraising event on June 29 where pupils don sunglasses for charity. There are suggestions for other ways to raise money, for example, recycling schemes from old mobile phones and inkjet cartridges to jewellery and foreign coins, said a spokeswoman for the charity.
