John Flamsteed is an effectively led and managed school. The governors, headteacher and staff with management responsibilities have a shared commitment to the positive ethos of the school and to improvement in educational standards and the quality of education provided. The members of the governing body understand their role well and are effective in providing a strategic overview of where the school is heading and ensuring that statutory requirements are met.

The working relationship between the governors and the senior management of the school is open and staff and governors know each other well. A regular dialogue exists between the chair of governors and the headteacher, which does challenge and question.

Governors are aware of the local and national educational framework and are currently concentrating on monitoring academic standards by regular departmental reviews and annual scrutiny of GCSE results and other data. This has increased their knowledge and enabled them to meet their monitoring responsibilities. The chair of governors places importance on enabling all governors, who represent the whole community, to have the necessary skills and knowledge to enter into discussion and debate. This, combined with a review of the structure of the governing body, which set up working groups, has meant that they are effective in their support for school management.”
