THE first five “light touch” inspection reports on initial teacher training were published this week. The shorter inspections for good providers examine whether they are up to the job of ensuring standards are maintained on training courses.

Meanwhile, universities failed by the Office for Standards in Education will no longer face immediate cuts in student teacher numbers, the Teacher Training Agency said. It is reviewing how it uses inspection reports to allocate funding to institutions.
