Student teachers in Aberdeen have undergone training with an oil giant on how to make science inspiring to primary school pupils, in line with A Curriculum for Excellence.

The 14 teachers went through training with the Shell education service before leading a series of workshops with pupils from the city’s St Machar Primary. They encouraged children to take part in hands-on investigations, such as discovering how clockwork radios were powered and how circuits worked.

Aberdeen University education lecturer Chris Fraser said: “This initiative gives our students, many of whom do not have a strong background in science, a wonderful opportunity to develop their confidence to teach this subject.”

Shell said the course matched the aims of A Curriculum for Excellence, particularly in enabling young people to become successful learners with the motivation to apply knowledge in different ways.
