LECTURERS at City College, Norwich, went on strike this week over a controversial restructuring plan which would replace some of them with instructors or learning advisers.
Up to 50 posts will be lost as a result of proposed changes to six areas. The college says staff reductions will only affect courses where changes in demand affect their viability.
In three centres some practical courses would be taught by intructors or trainers. NATFHE, the lecturers’ union, said: “They would be paid less and they would not have to have a teaching qualification. This is education on the cheap. Yet the college is not in financial crisis, but is projected to make a surplus.”
They said management had indicated that an alternative to redundancy would be for lecturers to be downgraded to trainers, instructors or learning advisers.
