Serious management work is often done late at night, with the library closed and key documents miles away in school. Internet access suddenly seems like a brilliant idea.
Teachernet’s school management pages are a good example of the out-of-hours help now available. They open up access to a broad sweep of useful information. The first page has a contact list of all English schools, a link to the Department for Education and Skills’ A to Z guide, and more besides. For the dogged user, prepared to tunnel a little deeper, the site gradually reveals handy items such as a teachers’ pay calculator and descriptions of the eight kinds of capital funding available from the department.
There are support documents on performance management, buildings maintenance and (as if you needed it) a discussion area for insomniac task-avoiders.
Addresses for individual items are long-winded so it is better to go to the main page and browse from there. www.teachernet.gov.ukManagement Readers can email suggestions on future Internet Insights to Sam Saunders at J.P.Saunders@leeds.ac.uk
