In the debate about A* grades at A2 level (“What will top A-level candidates have to measure up to next?”, August 28), no one seems to question the need for universities to differentiate between the rising number of pupils gaining the top grade.

But what is the educational justification for the need? Shouldn’t any university be able to provide an appropriate higher education for anyone with this type of initial qualifications?

Can’t Oxbridge cope with students who are “merely” of A rather than A* standard? What an indictment of its undergraduate teaching if it can’t.
