Israel boycott looms

The UCU backed the first step towards an academic boycott of Israel by voting to debate the issue in every branch.

Advocates of the boycott compared Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians with apartheid in South Africa, and said that Israeli academics were complicit in the occupation of Palestinian land.

But opponents said it was an unjustified collective punishment, which would also hit the most liberal, pro-Palestinian part of Israeli society.
